* Bill Gates had originally rejected the idea of a dedicated

Bill Gates had originally rejected the idea of a dedicated browser, but in 1997 on hearing that the Netscape browser had demonstrated the potential to make Windows obsolete, he invested heavily in the development of the browser.

Hi Experts.

Isn't event though required here as per the meaning of the sentence?
Are even though and but redundant if used together?
What is exactly the problem with C?

Basically my question is can we use a subordinator and a conjunction together in a sentence?

Even though Galton used less than one hundred samples for his initial investigation, and used statistical methods that are not entirely convincing, his claim that fingerprints are unique is almost universally accepted.

Hi,

Firstly, I am not a GMAT expert; allow me to express my thoughts on this SC question.

1. Subordinate conjunctions: Even though, while, and although introduce clauses that appear to be logically incompatible but in fact are not.

2. Sub. Conj. connects two unequal parts, e.g. dependent and independent clauses

3. Pure conjunctions (FANBOYS) connect two equal parts of a sentence. (independent)

In my view, in option (C) by using Sub. conj. "Even though" with Conj. "but" makes the construction incorrect with respect to actual intention of the sentence.

Bill Gates rejected the idea before 1997.
Netscape demonstrated the potential of that idea in 1997.
After this incidence, Gates invested in the development.

To answer your query, option (C) does not work out if we apply the rule and logic. Although and whereas are redundant on GMAT. About the usage of "Even though" and "but" I am not very sure.

E.g.
Even though John had time, he didn't watch that program.
Even though John had time, but he didn't watch that program.

Even though means despite the fact that..and but mean contrast. So, all these reasons make the option C incorrect.

In option D resolves these issues.

Let us see what are the views of the experts.

Thanks.
Kamlesh.
