appropriate use of "each"

Hi!
I read the following sentence somewhere:
"Each of these horses cost five thousand rupees."
In my understanding, "each of" construction is considered a singular subject; so, the correct sentence should read, "each of these horses costs five thousand rupees."
Is this sentence incorrect, or has my understanding failed me?

P.S. besides helping with the question, please correct if you find any syntactic, stylistic, or grammatical error in the post.

The subject "each" does mean "each ONE" - so, yes, you'd need to say "each of the horses costs five thousand rupees." Each one costs five thousand rupees.
