Amongst Reset CATS (1A-5A) will there be repeat questions?

by niggaron Sat Oct 03, 2009 12:13 pm

Hello,

I signed up for the MGMAT 5 CAT practice exam's last year and at that time took 1.5 of the exams. I just signed in today, and wanted to reset the whole process because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't remember much from the first 1.5 CATs.

So I figured I'd just skip the next 3.5 sections using the 'skip section' option (literally completing all the tests in 5 minutes) so I could use the reset option to clear all the tests back to CAT 1. Unfortunately, the system did not allow me to do this, and actually gave me the new option of beginning CAT 1A. I was wondering whether there will be repeat questions amongst the CAT set 1A-5A (ie the possibility of the same questions showing up in say CAT1A as in CAT2-5A and vice versa?), or whether these tests will test similarly to CATS 1-5 with no repeat questions amongst the specific set.

If there are repeats, I might need tech support to completely reset my account.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, when you start 1A (or higher) tests, the system is now allowed to give you questions that appeared in the first batch of 6. This will happen at any point after you have taken (or artificially skipped) the first 6 tests.

Because repeats are allowed after the first 6, there isn't any reason to delete the old ones - they're listed there in case you want to go back and look at an old test for any reason. (Though sounds like you won't have much need to do that!)

You should be okay in general though. First, there are more than 1,200 questions in the database, and you only saw 1.5 tests' worth, so the chances are low (though, obviously, not zero). Plus, if it has been a while, as you said, then you aren't going to remember them anyway.

If you do want to start a new account so that the old 6 files disappear, you can do that - but it won't change anything in terms of the chances of getting repeats. If you'd like to discuss with tech support, they can be reached at techsupport@manhattangmat.com or 800.576.GMAT.

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify, for example when I take CAT 1A, will it lock the questions so that I won't see these questions in CATs 2A-5A? Also CATs 1A-5A will test the same as if I was taking CATs 1-5 (pulling random questions from the databank), and at the same progression of difficulty, correct?

Thanks again!

The algorithm works the same no matter what (in terms of adapting to your performance as you take the test).

I believe that 2A will not give you any questions you saw on 1A, but I'm not actually 100% positive. I'll ask our IT department.
