Ambiguity of questions

by Gwyns Mon Aug 16, 2010 6:16 am

I amtaking the GMAT for the second time next weekend. My problem is not how to solve the math problems, but rather how to interpret the questions. I have hired two GMAT tutors - one of which was a math major - and both had trouble interpreting the question itself! Any advice? thanks.

First, this is such a general question that there is no possible way I could answer you in a forum post. I wish I could! But the way to interpret questions - that's pretty much what we talk about for our entire 9 week-long course. There are all kinds of different ways depending upon the question type and subtype and content area being tested.

If you would like to post individual problems from MGMAT or GMATPrep materials and ask how to interpret them, we would be happy to discuss. (If you do this , please make sure to post the problems in the relevant folders - not this one.)

Second, if you are scheduled to the test next week-end and still struggling with how to interpret the questions, then perhaps taking the test next week-end is not the best idea. Are you taking practice tests? Are you taking them under 100% official conditions? Are your scores in the range that you want to score on the real test? If the answers to these questions are yes, then great - take the test as scheduled. If some or all of the answers to these questions are no, then you may want to consider postponing your test until your practice test scores (taken under official conditions) are in the same range that you want to score on the real test.
