* Alice's take home pay.

by abhiroopsoni Tue Oct 19, 2010 11:14 pm

Alice's take home pay was the same each month last year, and she saved the same fraction of her take home pay each month. The total amount that she had saved at the end of the year was 3 times the amount of that portion of her monthly take home pay that she did not save. If all the money she saved last year was from her take home pay, what fraction of her take home pay did she save each month.
1. 1/2
2. 1/3
3. 1/4
4. 1/5
5. 1/6

Please help me answer this question, with the explanation.

Let the monthly salary be x & money saved from monthly salary be y
Fraction of monthly salary saved each month = y/x
Now,we are given that,
12y=3(x-y) {Money saved in a year -> 12y & money that was not saved each month -> x-y)
4y=x-y
We need to find y/x which comes out to be 1/5..
Answer is D..

Please confirm the answer

Searching beforehand saves time:)

yes -- in any question that features easily searched text, you should search for the problem before entering it into a new thread.

since this problem doesn't really add any information above what is included in the thread referenced by gokulnair, i think we will delete this thread in about a week.
