Advanced Staregy - Chapter 11 Odds & Even

by charbit.benjamin Mon Apr 11, 2011 12:56 pm

Hello,

P.148, there is a data sufficiency "what is the remainder when a is divided by 4?"
For (1) we have : a is the square of an odd integer.
My question is easy : is "1" a possible value for a ? Because the explanation does not consider that scenario.

Thanks a lot

Even if we consider 1, square of 1 = 1 and 1 divided by 4 leaves a remainder of 1 (same as square of any other odd integer). hence there is no apparent discrepancy in the final answer but in my view, yes we should consider 1 also.

i'm totally confused. of course they didn't consider 1 as a scenario. they didn't consider ANY specific numbers as a scenario. why did you single out 1 and ask about it?
