Absolute values

by RobertoB400 Sun Mar 01, 2015 5:52 am

Is |X|= A-B?

1) X=A-B
2) X=B-A

I think it's C but I got it from a BTG forum where no one says an official final answer (mostly C and D). My logic behind the answer is:

The stem asks us if x=a-b and at the same time x=b-a. A YES/NO answer.

Each statement individually is insufficient, together they provide both equations for x.

if you have the two statements together, then you know that a = b and that x = 0. if you don't see why this is so, just play around with different a's and b's for a bit, and you'll see what the deal is.

since this question is in the wrong folder (this folder is for MGMAT CAT problems only), this thread is now locked.
also, since the source is unknown, we can't host the problem here, as there's no way of telling whether it is from a banned source.
