Absolute number of incorrectly answered questions

by mba Sat Aug 01, 2009 12:48 pm

I am sure this question has been asked many times, but just in case it hasn't:

I have recently completed a few of the MGMAT CATs, and so far I got reasonable
scores (700s). What worries me is the absolute number of questions I answered incorrectly.

For example: On my latest CAT -- Q45, V42, overall score 720 -- I got
18 quant questions and 13 verbal questions incorrect.

The number of incorrect answers strikes me as rather high.
Or am I looking at it the wrong way?

Note that ~80% of my quantitative questions and ~70% of my verbal questions
were in the 700-800 category.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

That's the way the test works. Everybody gets a lot of questions wrong and everybody gets roughly similar numbers wrong (except at the very high and low ends of the scale).

This is a consequence of the adaptive nature of the test. Instead of thinking of it as "percent correct = my score" (which is how tests in school worked), think of it as "what are the highest level questions at which I can consistently answer around 60% correct?" That's what determines your score. (Your verbal percentage is a bit higher because your verbal score is quite high - but, even then, you get a lot of questions wrong!)
