A technique problem about RC.

by EvanL786 Sun Dec 21, 2014 9:34 pm

I found I cannot find what I need to go find in the passage for some RC questions before I read the options, since these questions don't offer me the "keywords". However, I am not sure whether I am right. If my understanding is wrong, please correct me.

For example, the 77th question of verbal review asks what was true about job segregation in the US (I changed most of the words). However, the whole passage talks about job segragation.

Also, the 86th question of verbal review asks which of the following the author believes is true. In this case, I have to read the options first, right?

If I don't have to read the options first, can instructors give me some advises how to attack questions like these?
If I am right, is that means this kind of questions will consume more time than ordinary LOOKUP questions?

in general, if a question has no keywords at all (or if the things that look like keywords are actually themes of the entire passage), you should be able to answer that question by using your larger understanding of the passage.

for instance, in item #77, choices A, C, D are pretty much exactly the opposite of what the passage as a whole is about, so those are straightforward eliminations with only main-idea thinking.
and then there's E, which mentions something that's never mentioned, or even remotely implied, in the passage.

in any case, the point is that your strategy should be flexible. in other words, you should just have a "plan A" and a "plan B" for questions without keywords.
plan A: use your understanding of the passage as a whole.
plan B: if you can't reach a single answer choice that way, THEN start looking in the REMAINING choices for some specifics.

probably. but, that's how life works. some things take longer than others.

the same can be said for word problems in the quant section. do they take longer than others? sure.
does this observation have any meaningful consequences for your test-taking strategy? nope.
