A score of 680

by us_saha2002 Wed Jun 24, 2009 8:20 am

Hi , I have taken the first online practice test and have scored 680 ; I have got 51 in QA but have done badly in the Verbal section with a low score of 33 only . My scheduled appointment for the GMAT is just 28 days away . The report shows that I have meshed up with the Reading Comprehension section the most. Can you suggest me , keeping in view the short time that I have in hand , how should I proceed to get a few more questions correct in the verbal section. What strategy helps most in dealing with the RC blows . I take roughly 4 minutes to read a passage and take 2.5 minutes on an average to answer each question that follows. Moreover the schools that I aspire for, have a median 720 score in GMAT . So I think a score of 730-740 would be safe for me.

How have you been studying so far? What materials have you used to learn how to approach RC passages and questions?

Also, the timing you provided is generally higher than the time we should spend on RC, which means you must be spending less time on some other part of the test (SC/CR). Are you still okay in those areas even though you're not spending the typical amount of time on those questions?

The general timing is: 1 to 1.5m for SC, 2m for CR, 2-4m to read a passage, 1m for general RC questions, 1.5 to 2m for specific RC questions. Did you have to rush at times and possibly make random guesses? If you did have to rush and/or make random guesses, on how many questions would you say you did that? Did you do it on a lot of questions in a row or were the guesses scattered? Just want to make sure we get to the full impact of any timing issues - that can have a big (negative) effect on the score.
