The first commercially successful drama to depict Black family life sympathetically and the first play by a Black woman to be produced on Broadway, it was Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun that won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award in 1959, and was later made into both a film and a musical.

(C)Lorraine Hansberry won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for A Raisin in the Sun in 1959, and it was later made

(D)Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award in 1959 and was later made

The non underlined part of the sentence "The first commercially successful drama to depict Black family life sympathetically and the first play by a Black woman to be produced on Broadway" are two noun modifiers both are modifying the NOUN "A Rising in the sun".
These modifiers should be next to the NOUN hence we can remove choices A B and C.
Among choices D and E
(D)Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award in 1959 and was later made
these are not parallel
(E) has the parallel elements "won the New York Drama Critics' Circle award" and "later made it"
E should be the answer

Only D and E have proper modifier reference :
- Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin........
- A Raisin in the Sun ......
Both are correct.

In E - the subject is " A Raisin in the Sun " .......... later made it..( by X ) is a passive and awkward construction. How can the "A raisin in the sun" can made itself into both a film and a musical ?
its better if we write : subject was later made into ( more direct and concise )

So D is better than E.

1) We need an image to verify.

2) If this is from GMAT Prep, we have a separate forum.

3) Most (if not all) GMAT Prep problems have explanations aplenty on the web. This problem is not referenced anywhere as a GMAT Prep problem. Not saying that it isn't, but we need a picture of it from GMAT Prep software before we can discuss.
