620-I didn't click the NEXT then CONFIRM button

I took my GMAT exam a few days back and I scored too low in that,merely 620(Q48/84% and V27/43%) and 4/21% in writting. I was not expecting this much score .I started in January,2008. Five months back,in April, I scored 640 in GMATPrep 1 and one month back on the 16th of August,2008 I scored 690 in GMATPrep 2. I am a Dentist so I thought I need more effort as I never studied maths after my schooling which I did 14 years back. Verbal was also a difficult concern for me as in medical field english terminology is drastically different. Having this in my mind,I studied nearly 18 books and studied regularly 7 hours a day. So this score has raised some doubts in my mind about my performance. Actually,I am thinking that I made some mistakes there.Please let me know whether I am correct or not.

1---- I didn't click the NEXT button on the two Analytical Writting sections so the computer showed me 'YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED'.That's why I got low score in that section.I did this to gain a few seconds only because I thought that I have completed the anlytical writting so I should focus on the re-reading of the written agrument and the issue rather then caring for the time that has been allotted,as it will automatically expire.

2----I didn't click the confirm button for the last question (though I completed all the questions 37/37 and 41/41) on the Quantitative and the Verbal sections so the computer showed me 'YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED'.That's why I got low score in that section.My reason for doing this was the same as above,I thought I have clicked the answer choice so the computer will automatically confirm that answer as that was the last question.

3----I got low scores because I didn't completed all the four sections in time and this includes the two analytical sections also,means not completing the analytical section also gives penanlity on that overall score which is from 800.

Though the GMAT bulletin mentions the penality for not completing the Quantitative and Verbal sections it has not mentioned that what if somebody doesn't complete the analytical section on the exam and is there there any penality on the overall score(from 800) and the score of that section ,for not completing the analytical section. Please let me know about these 3 question,I will be thankful to you.

So it recorded -----THE CANDIDATE HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO FINISH THE TEST IN TIME---then its next step---DEDUCT HIS/HER MARKS ACCORDING TO THE QUESTIONS LEFT-----this is how it operates,I guess.And it would have deducted yur marks according to the level of your last question for which you had not clicked confirm.And perhaps same applies to the analytical section. What do you say now?

What do you say now?[/quote]Thanks.i am going to take my test again in the coming month and won't do this now.Also I was sufferring from Typhoid fever for 1.5 months and on the test day also I was ill and had a very bad headache....may be that was the reason for doing such a blunder.

Also I am a doctor.I don't know why you appeared for the test if you had Typhoid fever. In typhoid fever both the fever as well as the medications a patient takes cause Delirium(lack of attention and hence confusion).You could have cancelled your appointment instead of scoring low. I will definetely say that it was your fever not you which scored 620 because what you wrote is impressing to me.I understand the difficulty which we as a medical graduates face while preparing for GMAT. No one to guide as we always have short time,besides patients, to prepare for studies.Also the study of GMAT includes all those topics which we people have never seen.

I think people here should be more concerned about Micky's question.Answer his question....b'coz everybody knows fever is fever no matters what type of....its always bad and no one is happy and calm in fever.

I think noone reads the analytical writting,only computer gardes it.Because many people receive there scores of writting within two days.If so,then tell me is it possible to read for an authorised gmat person ,gmat test takers say that,such a huge volume which comes everyday from all over the world within two days and score the report.if so then there may be very large number of people appointed specially for this or only computer rates this section.

Okay, some myths floating around here - see below. Also, the reason I'm only getting to the question right now is precisely because there's so much conversation on this post! I answer the oldest questions first, and every time somebody responded to this, it re-set the time/date stamp to later in time... :)

The test accepts whatever you have on the screen, for either the essays or the current multiple choice question, when time runs out. You do not have to click next and confirm in order for it to accept the current essay or multiple choice answer. So, Micky, that did not affect your test.

I'm assuming the typhoid fever, on the other hand, was a major factor, especially if you felt ill during the test itself. Frankly, I'm impressed that you still scored a 620!

So, first, get better. Also start thinking about what other differences may have existed between your practice tests and the real thing. Did you do the practice tests in full, including essays, and do them all at once, with only a 10-min break between sections? Otherwise, stamina was likely an issue and caused your final section (verbal) to drop. (In fact, I'm thinking stamina was probably an issue anyway given your illness - the longer you went, the harder it would've been to continue to concentrate and perform well.)

Write down any other differences you can remember (from practice tests to real test), large or small, and let us know - maybe we can help you to interpret anything else that went wrong. Then you can tackle those things (as well as recovering from typhoid!).

Also, for the essays: one real live person grades each essay and a computer program also grades each essay. You get a total of four scores, therefore, for your two essays, and those four scores are averaged to arrive at your overall score.

There is no doubt that I was tired at the end of the test.Actually I was very nervous on the test day,may be because the test itself was not of my stream or may be because I was not well. I went on thinking that I am ill (but I was not feeling well on that day) . I was not able to get rid of my headache even after taking all my medicines and talking three tablets of painkiller from morning to afternoon-till my test,but all in vain.
I attempted the argument very well but not the issue. I felt the quant section easy because there was not a single question which I felt was difficult or for which I have to search my brain for the formula.So whatever mistakes I did in the quant section is acceptable to me as I was expecting above 47 score from the very begining and I scored 48.So thats okay.Till then I had taken the 10 minutes break as I had to drink water(dehydrated) because of the medicines and go to the washroom as that was also a problem for me at that time.
When I saw the verbal section,I didn't get puzzled as I was more confident in that section than maths.I don't know from where I got this confidence but it was always there from the begining of preparation, may be because I took the Toefl test five years back with negligible practice and got 267/300 ( I scored 5.5/6 in writting).
NOW COMES THE MAJOR PROBLEM.I was on the 19th question when the time left was 38min:few seconds.My strategy was --I should be on the 19 or the 20th question when the time left will be 38min. I am still not able to remember what I did after that question.I was loosing focus on the screen . I had to read the question twice or thrice and same went for the choices.I was on the 32 question when the time left was 5min:few seconds.I think here I stepped down.I was very tired and was in hurry(of my mind) and wanted to go out but with good scores. So what I did----I fastly clicked the next five-six questions without seeing them because I thought ---I am nervous and I am loosing focus on the screen so I can only do two-three questions in five minutes so I opted the last questions for the remaining five minutes.But still I remember and I wonder I was not able to think correctly what should I do for the last question.I kept on starring on the screen and was very nervous.So again I clicked by guessing.
So now you can see after 19th question I got my stamina broken.But this was the first time when I felt so much anxiety and nervousness.Rest you tell me STACEY what should I do for my GMAT retake.I have attempted the gmatprep tests multiple times but you are correct in that I always skipped the writting section.
I always felt I will get 700+ because I always perform well at the time of my exam rather than home study/exam.(As I get more cautious at the exam time).Now at this moment I am very sad.Whenever I think about my score of 620 I get a feeling that who knows what happened ,may be 620 is my actual caliber because everyone thinks that he is intelligent and can score 700+ ......or it could be my fever.ONLY GOD KNOWS.
