590 Q38 V38

by arjun.mishra03 Tue Apr 15, 2014 5:54 am

Hello,
my gmat is scheduled on 3rd may,2014.

I gave my 1st MGMAT test today and scored 590 (Q38 V34).

I am highly disappointed with my Quant score.

Can you please tell me how accurate is MGMAT test?

If i score 590 on the first test. How much score can i expect on the TEST DATE?

Thanks

Our CATs have a standard deviation of about 50 points. (The real test has a standard deviation of about 30 points.)

As a general rule, whatever you're scoring about 1-2 weeks before your real test is very roughly what you should expect to get on the real test. This assumes you take the practice test under 100% official conditions, including essay and IR. If you skip some sections, give yourself longer breaks than allowed, or do anything else that could give you a mental advantage, then your official test is more likely to be at the lower end of your practice test range.

If you're hoping to get a much higher score than 590 (and I assume this is the case, since you said you were very disappointed), you should consider postponing your test. It typically takes at least a couple of months (usually longer) to achieve a significant score increase. You can postpone your test for a $50 fee as long as you do so more than 7 days in advance of the test date.

Hello stacey,
That was really helpful.
i gave two more MGMAT CATs under 100% official condition:

640 (Q44 V34)
630 (Q42 V34)

I found quant on the harder side because on the gmat prep quant i scored 49.
Can you please tell me if i could expect a better quant score on the test day?
Also tell me the same regarding the verbal score because i got V34 in both the tests but i got a V21 on the gmatprep?

thanks

There is no bias in one direction or the other. When you look at the aggregated (average) data, it isn't the case that most quant scores go up or down on test day or that most verbal scores go up or down on test day.

Some individuals go up, of course, and some individuals go down, but I have no way of predicting what will happen in your course (or anyone's!).

All I can say is that, in general, whatever you're scoring within a week or two of the real test is most likely around what you will score on the real test.

I am concerned that your GMATPrep is showing such a large difference compared to MPrep - with quant much higher and verbal much lower. Those kinds of score fluctuations usually mean there are issues with timing, mental stamina, careless errors, holes in your foundation, or all of the above. If that's the case, you would want to work out whatever those issues are before you take the real test, ideally.

You can use this to analyze your MGMAT CATs:

GMATPrep doesn't provide you with data, unfortunately, so you'll have to just dive in and figure out how to analyze it qualitatively.

When you've done that, feel free to come back here to tell us what you've figured out, as well as what you think you should do based on that analysis. We'll tell you whether we agree and advise you further. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)
