2nd attemp -Urgent help on strategy ...just 3 weeks left

by bolopaneer Sun Sep 04, 2011 7:51 am

Hi
First some background.
I reside in India, and i started my preparations 4 months before scheduled exam date.
Though i was very weak on my verbal part before preparation, i was pretty ok on my maths part.
I had scheduled my first exam of GMAT on 19 Aug 11 .after preparations you can my status was as i described here
http://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/help-4-days-left-for-real-thing-score-is-roller-coaster-t13622.html
(not taken 6th last MGMAT test)
Till then i studied maths from random sources ,specially from mistakes that commit on exam(review).
And for RC i only read news paper that too rarely as i hate reading...(though i totally hate studying)
For SC i was studying from MGMAT book and CR i was studying OG only.(i bought only SC book because i only have hopes form it.)

On the test day

My score was not stable but when i gave my exam .it was a nice experience except for 1 thing in when i reading RC passage in VREBAL - MY PC GOT RESTARTED :(

I tried to be calm as much as i can and gave the paper without complains. Firstly i was planning to cancel my score then i dared and open my score. When i saw the result i was not so much shocked (infect a bit happy that i didn’t scored as low i was expecting after a reset) it was 650 (Q49 as usual , V30 :( )
I filled a complaint again this to GMAC and they agreed on retest . on 23 sep.
Now the major concern.

Preparation for PHASE 2

Just after giving exam i realised that i can bring a good score and Gmat prep was not a good estimation of my skills. There was a stationary shop below my exam centre. i bought set of all 7 (SC i already had)MGMAT books and started preparing from 20th but after hovering over internet i started reading CR From LSAT CR book(now it looks like a big risk). Till now i have done SC RC and maths book (left with 04 - The Word Translations Guide 4th edition-my worst area)from MGMAT book section and most of LSAT CR book(too lengthy).

Today i gave my 6th MGMAT test again i got 680 49Quant /34verbal disappointed in last .
i am going office also now as i have used up all my leaves so Please suggest me how to prepare not in next 20 days and as i have given all my MGMAT test now i don’t have any good test to give... saying by heart i felt MGMAT test were better evaluater for me than GMAT prep. I don’t know which test to give now and how to practice.
Can I GIVE MGMAT Tests again (if they don’t repeat them self)..?
Here my statics over all in reply to this post, please suggest something and also look on this link

We would be happy to help but we need you to analyze the data yourself and tell us what you think. We don't analyze all of the data for you (unless you want to meet with a private tutor). Actually, you *want* to learn to analyze it yourself - that's a crucial skill for improving oneself.

Please use this article to help you analyze your results:
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... ice-tests/

(Note that % correct, by itself, is an almost meaningless data point. I did look at your link to the post in which you posted accuracy rates for various SC questions - but that data doesn't mean much, especially for SC. Every SC questions tests multiple principles. You might get a question labeled "subject-verb" wrong, but you might have gotten it wrong for a different reason - you might have been fine with the S-V part of the question.

I'm glad that they gave you a retest. Your verbal score, though, was about what you should have expected based on your practice test results (posted in the other thread to which you linked). You mention wanting a 700. You're not too too far from your goal (you got a 650), but 2-3 weeks isn't much time. Most people wouldn't be able to achieve a 50 point improvement in that timeframe.

Do you have the opportunity to reschedule your exam? Most people in your situation would need more time.

You can re-take your MGMAT tests, but you may see repeated questions after the first 6 tests. Don't study questions from past tests - try to forget all about them so that you won't remember if you do see a repeated question.

You can still take both GMATPrep and MGMAT CATs with repeats as long as you follow a few guidelines to minimize the chance of artificially inflating your score via question repeats. First, anytime you see a problem that you remember (and this means: I know the answer or I'm pretty sure I remember the answer, not just "hmm, this looks vaguely familiar..."), immediately look at the timer and make yourself sit there for the full length of time for that question type. This way, you don't artificially give yourself more time than you should have. Second, think about whether you got this problem right the last time. If you did, get it right again this time. If you didn't, get it wrong again. If you *completely honestly* think that you would get it right this time around if it were a new question (even though you got it wrong last time) because you've studied that area and improved, then get it right this time.

I just saw that you said you've used up all of your leave time and have to go back to work - that means it's even more important for you to reschedule your test for a later date, if you can.
