14/37 if x is not equal to 0 , then ?x^2/x=

by ms100 Sat Jun 23, 2007 2:23 pm

Q 14/37 if x is not equal to 0 , then ?x^2/x=
A=-1
B=0
C=1
D=x
E=abs value of x/x.
Ans is E, I put C bc in strat guide is says that gmat follows convention that sqrts are always positive.

When you are asked square root of 4, it's called "the principal square root" and you only give the positive answer.

BUT, when you are taking the square root of both sides of an equation (x^2 = 4), the answer is positive and negative 2.

In this situation, b/c x is a variable, by definition, the square root of X^2 is the absolute value of x.

yep - basically, if they give you a square root sign, then you're just taking the positive root. If they give you, say, a quadratic, and you're doing the work to square root it on your own, you take both roots. Really annoying.

Hi team

Bumping this thread. Can you please explain what is being asked here ? (x^2)/x or x^(2/x) ?

Also, isn't abs value of (x/x) = abs value of (1) = 1 ?

I cant understand the question.

Thank you!

Wow, the transcription of this problem was really messed up! As near as I can tell, the question was supposed to be asking for sqrt(x^2)/x, and answer choice E was supposed to be |x|/x. Let me know if you still have any questions after applying these patches (or if my transcriptions don't make sense).
