Why D and not C?

First the sentence requires the first part to subordinate the second part So choice C, D, E are out.

Between choice A and B Choice A incorrectly uses Either X or Y. So the answer is choice B

There's something about this question that just rubs me the wrong way; the relationship between the two parts of the sentence just isn't that clear. Although 1000SC has some value, I hope you've exhausted better resources (like both OG's and our problem banks) before using it.

As for 'why D and not C': Choice C, like choices A and B, contains a transition that indicates some sort of contrast between the two parts of the sentence. (This transition is 'but' in the case of choice C, and 'although' in the case of the first two choices.) If you examine the meaning of the sentence, that contrast just isn't there; the meaning is better served by '...and also' (because the sentence is talking about additional museum options).

Ron is right - the sentence is indeed a bit spooky. However, if we closely follow the sentence and read it from the top, it seems to convey information about the Museums.

1. Museums are devoted to either A or B &
2. A few of the Mus are open for exploration over the weekends.

The above two are non-comparable sentences that can not be contrasted in anyway. Therefore, A, B & C are out straight away and E is incorrect as 'Devoted to' does not have a subject to modify.

Only D stands out and provides the information in two sentences that are glued with an AND to avoid a comma splice error.

nice four-year thread bump there (and on your first and only post, no less. wow)

1000sc has been a banned source on this forum for a couple of years now, because the quality of most of its questions (like this one) is just awful.
i won't delete the thread, since it was originally posted before we decided to ban the source, but we won't continue to discuss problems from that source.

thanks

(the list of banned sources is given in the first post in the folder -- the "forum rules" post)

I have a few questions. I keep looking up these sentence correction problems my tutor has been assigning me from the old GMAC paper tests for verbal prep. They are coming up under 1000 SC. But what is 1000 SC and why is it banned if every question I keep searching is from the old paper tests? These are official questions that my tutor is assigning. What is going on here?

the old paper tests are also banned here.

...and you shouldn't be using those anyway.
GMAT SC has evolved a great deal since the days of the paper tests.
lots and lots and lots of the paper-test SC problems depend on concepts that are no longer tested (and haven't been for years)—style issues, obscure idioms, and so on.

waaaaaayyyy back when the paper tests were a thing, almost everyone taking the GMAT was a US native. since then the demographics of the test pool have changed radically. (nowadays english learners outnumber native speakers in the test pool.)

in essence, GMAT SC has been overhauled to eliminate any bias against adult learners of english (or, equivalently, any bias toward native speakers of the language). the changes have been huge.
so, by using the paper tests for SC, you are essentially preparing for a test that no longer exists.
