Few things make us instructors happier than getting that glowing email from a student who has just achieved his or her goal score. While these students tend to have certain traits in common (a reasonable timeline, diligent studying, etc.), we’ve also noticed that successful students take many different paths to reach their goals.

Recently, the MPrep Instructor Manager team set out to investigate what habits and practices lead to successful outcomes for our students, with the hope of inspiring others just setting out on their test prep journeys. We asked our instructor pool to nominate students, and then reached out to these students to conduct brief interviews.

Today, we’ll be sharing one story from a recent student, with the hope that we’ll be able to continue sharing more of these profiles in the future.

Liam (Student’s name has been changed for privacy)

Grad school plans: Plans to attend a full-time MBA program in the fall of 2020

Liam embarked on his GMAT journey in May of 2019. Because he had always been a good test taker, Liam was surprised by the 590 he got on his first practice exam. He initially attempted to self-study, but was looking for more structure, and so he decided to sign up for a Manhattan Prep GMAT course with instructor Reed Arnold. He found the structure of the course incredibly helpful. The syllabus for the course forced him to study verbal, something he wouldn’t have done on his own since he had always felt that he was good at English. He ended up increasing his verbal score by five points. He also utilized Manhattan Prep’s Navigator quite heavily. Every time he sat down to do his homework, he had Navigator opened up on his laptop, and over time, he was able to collect data on his strengths and weaknesses from his Official Guide performance.

He attributes his rigorous study schedule as the single most important factor for his score increase. He woke up at the same time every day to squeeze in 45 minutes of study before going off to work. He even woke up at the same time on Saturdays and Sundays! For Liam, this investment was worth the long-term payoff of getting into a program of his choice and opening up his career opportunities. Through it all, he stayed motivated by tricking himself into thinking that the GMAT was “fun.” In the class sessions, his instructor Reed helped him to think about GMAT problems as puzzles and gamified his studies. Liam often made deals with himself that if he studied a certain number of hours or got certain questions right, he could go out and grab a beer with friends. In the end, Liam’s creative and disciplined studies paid off. He scored a 690 in September of 2019 and is happy to be done with his studies!

Here at MPrep we know that dude as Michael Bilow (one of those people who command such respect that he must always be talked about using his last name lest anyone in earshot mistakenly attribute an anecdote or joke to some less deserving Michael). On Jeopardy, he lived up to his legend taking home the fourth highest single-day winnings in Jeopardy history: $57,198.

Michael Bilow joined the Manhattan Prep family in 2011 using his perfect GRE score and spectacular teaching chops to secure a role as an LA-based GRE instructor. A few years later we realized we needed more Bilow in our business so we asked him to join the Marketing Department. He took a position as our Business Data Analyst, while continuing to teach GRE classes and pursue his PhD. After seeing him flawlessly juggle those responsibilities, we never had any doubt that he would take the Jeopardy world by fire.

By now the whole country knows of Bilow’s intellectual prowess, but we know so much more. Michael is a dedicated practitioner of improv, a delightful presence in Google Hangout meetings, and a stylish dresser. We can’t wait for his next trip to the New York City headquarters so he can buy us a drink with his winnings after he takes a quick a nap in a tutoring pod.

Congrats, Michael Bilow! Keep it up!

After logging in over 6,000 hours to produce GMAT Interact, we were beyond excited to officially announce the launch to our 75+ party guests, who gathered at Manhattan Prep’s corporate headquarters in New York City. Upon entrance to the cocktail reception, guests were encouraged to strike their best red carpet-pose in front of the GMAT Interact step and repeat banner.

Guests were also given the opportunity to walk around and explore wall displays that featured photos and facts about the GMAT Interact production process. This gave everyone a tangible sense of the development process and the many hours that went into making the cutting-edge learning tool that is GMAT Interact.
