Penny Wars!

by

manhattan gmat penny warsLast month, Manhattan Prep created a Penny War Challenge in order to raise money for UNICEF, an organization dedicated to child survival and well being. Staff members and instructors were divided into departmental teams, assigned corresponding team jars and provided the following rules: 1) Pennies count for +1 point, 2) All silver coins and dollars count as negative points based on their face value (example: $1 = -100pts), and 3) The team with the most points wins!

The competition jumped off to a frenzied start with teams strategically putting loose silver change in rival department’s jars. The activity heightened as employees began to bring in their saved pennies from home, slowly growing their team totals. After four weeks of displaying tallied team totals to help spur the competition, we entered the final countdown! Kim Moy, a member of the winning HR/Tech department team exclaimed, It was coming down to the wire with departments neck and neck. The underdogs darted to the finish line, while we battled it out on the penny field! It was a close call, but we all came out winners in the name of charity.

Thanks in part to both our dedicated employees as well as our company’s matching gift program, we raised a grand total of $616.74! Oh, what a difference a little friendly competition can make!

Manhattan GMAT + New York Cares

by

Last month, a few Manhattan Preppers headed to Brooklyn to partake in our second New York Cares Day.  In the spring, New York Cares Day aims to clean up city parks, gardens and public spaces all around the five boroughs. This year, there was a special focus on the city’s waterfront, and volunteers set out to restore 10 miles of coastlines to make the areas more sustainable for plant and animal life and more accessible for city residents.

Manhattan GMAT and New York Cares

We were assigned to paint a mural at the Jersey Barriers near Cobble Hill – someone must have heard we have a great artist on our team (shout out to Jon S!). Leading up to the event, the rest of us were crossing our fingers that it would be a paint by numbers mural, and we were definitely relieved to find out that we would be utilizing stencils. After given a brief tutorial on the vision of the mural, we set out to paint the barriers to resemble a lush forest landscape.  It was awesome to work beside other great companies, such as ZocDoc, who also sent out a team of volunteers. There were even a few passers-by, out on their morning run, who stopped to help with the community project! By the end of the day, we had made a few new friends and also left our artistic touch on a part of Brooklyn.

New York Cares Day has become one of our favorite volunteering activities in the office, and we are looking forward to another New York Cares Day this fall! For more information on New York Cares, you can visit their website at newyorkcares.org.

Manhattan GMAT’s Analysis Of GMAC’s Newly Released Integrated Reasoning Percentile Rankings

Manhattan GMAT IR

We’ve been talking a lot lately about how to prep for IR, including the idea that we only need a good enough score for now because the section is so new that the schools aren’t going to place heavy emphasis on IR right away. One key piece of information, though, has been missing: what’s a good enough IR score?

GMAC has just released the first set of percentile rankings for the 1 to 8 IR scoring scale. Here it is:

Venture for America’s 2012 Summer Celebration

by

We have an update today on former Manhattan GMAT President Andrew Yang. Andrew left us a year ago to start Venture for America, which has put him in the news recently.

We at Manhattan GMAT are incredibly proud of what Andrew has done with Venture for America and we wanted to pass along an opportunity for you to help support that great organization. On Tuesday, June 12th, Venture for America is having their 2012 Summer Celebration fundraiser in New York City with featured speaker Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos. Tickets are $250 (or $500 for VIP) and can be purchased here. Additional details can be found via the image below. We’ll all be there and we would love to see you there too.

If you’re unable to attend the fundraiser but would still like to support VFA, you can make a contribution to their Summer Celebration fundraising campaign

The Next-Gen GMAT: Multi-Source Reasoning

by

We haven’t tried one of these yet: multi-source reasoning. These questions will consist of 2 or 3 tabs of information with accompanying questions. MSRs tend to have 2 or 3 associated questions, though it’s possible to have just 1 or more than 3. The one we’re going to try has been released as a sample question on the mba.com website and contains just one accompanying question.

Try the problem

gmat multi source reasoningLet’s try out the question: here it is. Just in case that link changes, you can also click on this link to go to the next-gen GMAT website, and then, toward the bottom of the page, click on the Multi-Source Reasoning link. We’re going to try the very first problem (with the text beginning Yesterday was the deadline).

Note: when you are done, do NOT click the next button. Just leave it up on the screen and come back here.

Set your timer for 2.5 minutes and go! (Note: we have an average of 2 minutes and 30 seconds for each IR question in the section, but some question types are more complicated than others. I recommend trying this one for 2.5 minutes, but you can spend 3 to 3.5 if needed. Normally, we would have at least 2 questions and a total of at least 5 minutes to spend on an MSR prompt, but we’re answering only 1 question here.)
