Question 7 on pg 91 Guide no 2 Percents strategy-3rd series

by suzkoh123 Mon Nov 19, 2012 6:41 pm

Message: Question 7 on pg 91 Guide no 2 Percents strategy- Third series.
70 is 250% greater than what number?
Answer on page 95 is given as 20. Cannot understand.Pls clarify. My answer is 28.
Logically 100% of 20 =20, 200% of 20=40, 250% =50.
I tried 100 x70/250=28. 250% of 28=70

Hey Suzkoh,

You have to be very careful with percent questions, because just a few words can make a huge difference. For example:

What percent is 4 of 5 = 80%
What percent of 5 is 4 = 125%
What is the percent change from 4 to 5 = 25%
What is the percent change from 5 to 4 = 20%

What you confused was the difference between:

1) What number is 250% of 20?

and

2) What number is 250% greater than 20?

As you stated, the answer to the first question would be 50, by the exact logic you used.

But in the second case, it works differently:

What number is 100% greater than 20 --> 40

What number is 200% greater than 20 --> 60

What number is 250% greater than 20 ---> 70

Make sense?

Let me know!
